Technology and Model Trains

Every model train hobbyist can most likely remember their very first train they ever received. Toy trains became extremely popular in the 1950’s, and today the hobby still attracts a large community of model railway enthusiasts. So how has building model trains evolved as technology continues to evolve?

The first model train system used parts from wind-up clocks to run. Today, electronic model trains are digitally controlled down to every single and separate variable. Nowadays a model railroader can control the speed and direction of multiple trains on different tracks, including lights, signals, and even smoke!

It’s hard to dispute that the invention of the personal computer has changed the modern world as we know it. It has revolutionized how we work, play, and learn. So it is no wonder that model railroad hobbyists have been able to harness the power of the computer and integrate it into their love of model railroading. There are various software programs that work with different hardware components attached to trains, so each model train conductor can be in navigate their own train traffic control center.

Model railroading certainly hasn’t faded as technology gets more advanced. Just as X-ACTO knives are essential tools in this time-honored hobby, technology can be a great tool to enhance your whole model railroad experience.
