Mixed Media Tips

Add dimension and layers of detail with paper and mixed media techniques in your next art adventure. If you haven't tried mixed media before, here are a few handy tips:

  • First of all, mixed media is a collage technique using a variety of papers and mediums. Think outside of your normal canvas and use anything and everything, from newspaper, fabric, old telephone books, coffee filters, wrapping paper, etc. to name a few.
  • Using an acrylic gel medium can be helpful when attaching the different mediums onto your surface.
  • Papers with some transparency can give you some really interesting effects.
  • Expect to get messy. When creating your mixed media piece, using your fingers can help create the perfect collage.
  • Don't be afraid to combine art mediums as well as different papers. For instance, stamping on top of an acrylic wash can add some gorgeous details.
  • Whether you cut paper or shapes with your X-ACTO knife or choose to highlight torn edges in your art, your artwork can look more harmonious if you stick to one or the other for each piece.
  • Sealing your image with an overall gloss or matte medium can ensure that all of your images are sealed and give that extra bit of finesse.

Lastly, there are no rules in mixed media. Get creative and make your next mixed media masterpiece!
